A Letter from the crew of Ixion
Jake & I (Nick) , met in Los Angeles in January 2014 at a little coffee shop in North Hollywood called Republic of Pie. I was working in the commercial film production world and Jake was studying filmmaking. Right from the start, our relationship was built on creative collaboration. We would spend days working on various screenplays and tv pilots, going on as far as to have one web series nominated for two Emmys!
Then, at the beginning of 2019, things changed, we were working in the film industry but at some point, we had forgotten to live beyond the next film project. For want of a "comfortable life" we had stopped living and thriving. Sustaining an unsustainable lifestyle was all we were working for, so, we moved!
We moved back to Massachusetts, my home state, to reconnect with family and reexamine what was important in life. I found a full time 9-5 job, the first in nearly 10 years, and Jake became a real estate agent. Then, quite spontaneously, while scrolling through sailboatlistings.com I saw a boat that caught my eye.
Finding Ixion:
I had always had a connection to the ocean, by family, being from the Azores, passed their love of the islands with me. So when I saw an opportunity to finally buy a sailboat, after a surprisingly short discussion with Jake. He and I agreed to at least take a look and in less than 2 weeks Jake and I found ourselves the proud owners of a 1981 Catalina 30. Owing to our mutual love of both Greek mythology and Final Fantasy we named our new hobby Ixion, after the mythical figure who defied Zeus and gave rise to the noble Centaurs, for we saw our purchase as a brazen act of defiance against societal norms.
By this point in this forward, the date was July 19, 2019. Without either Jake or I knowing how to sail we set off and learned as much we could about sailing and boat ownership in what little remained in the New England summer. We quickly realized that sailing wasn't going to be just a hobby and decided we would merge our passion for filmmaking and for sailing together.
Join Us:
We've been taken by the serenity and freedom of being at sea and now have set ourselves on a course which will lead us across seas and braving the oceans of the world to share ourselves with all of you and explore how the peoples of the world choose to live. Join us as we sail across the world, documenting distance ports in search of building human connections. Your contributions will enable us to produce better videos, upgrade to blue-water boat, reach more people, and leave the world a little bit better than how we found it.
We're not looking to tell only our story, we want to connect with people around the world and tell their stories too. We're looking forward to sharing our adventure with all of you!
All the best!
Jake & Nick
