Catamarans for Sale! Is a Catamaran in Our Future?

Okay, let’s just be honest with one another. Nick and I have debated buying a Catamaran. Is it something we’ve ever experienced? No. Will we in the future? Definitely. I enjoy sailing well enough, but for me, this lifestyle is all about the travel. So, I wouldn’t mind a boat with more space, less heeling, and the ability to have people with us. So, we decided to do some research and dip our toes into the Catamaran world. According to Sail Magazine, these are a few of the best blue water Catamarans. I can’t speak to whether they are, because yet again, no experience with them. I’m just listing my initial thoughts about their design and appearance. Come join me. All Catamarans will be listed on Yacht World.

So the price of these size Catamarans in this year's range all seem to sit around the 300K mark, which isn’t too bad for their size. Apparently this boat is a good liveaboard and has performed multiple circumnavigations, which is always nice to hear. And hello on the four berths, talk about having family and friends over for a journey. My biggest critique, and it’s a doozy, is the rounded ness. Modern boats generally tend to be a little more square with straighter lines, this feels a little more old fashion on the outside. Maybe I’m insane, I don’t know, but I don’t like it. Wish there were more pictures of the galley and dinette area. Like, get it together photographers!

My first intro into this brand was through Sailing Zatara. They have a 60 foot version of this boat, I can’t afford that. Subscribe to our Patreon though. I’ve always liked the way theirs looked, and Sail Magazine said it’s a great boat! This one sits mid 300k. So in the same general range like above. I really like the galley and dinette area, it feels like a great use of space! In the pictures I didn’t get a sense of what the inside layout of the hulls were, but if Zatara is any clue, it’s good! I just like the overall look of this boat. Anyone have experience with them?

2003 Fountaine Pajot Belize 43 Maestro

Okay, for 2003 this looks weirdly old. Like everything is strangely rounded, or just straight up round. The galley sink is the main perpetrator. It’s accomplices are the countertops, and the entire galley setup. I get hard corners aren’t fun on a boat, but they just beat this one to death. It’s from this century yet it looks like it’s straight out of the 60s. Was there a design crisis for boats in the early 2000s that I didn’t know about? In general, not a huge fan of how this looks. The galley and dinette are okay, but the hulls are big thumbs down. They just seem so dark and dank and like we are just crossing the Atlantic for the first time in history.. Though the cabinet, bookcase combo thing in the master suite area was nice, that doesn’t do enough to make me want it. What say you gentle reader?

2008 Nautitech 44

For starters, calm down on the saturation photographers. It does nothing for your work. Now this catamaran looks more like the ones I’ve seen and been on at boat shows. The layout of the interior is more of what I’m accustomed to seeing in modern boats. It could definitely use some updating, but it’s decent in general. I could see me chilling out on anchor in this sucker. Also, what’s with the round sinks? Come on people, they’re ugly. Good luck cleaning a baking sheet in a tiny round sink. I’ll leave the designer to do it for me. I’d love to see more of the cabin in the hulls, but I get the general idea. This one sits squarely in the middle for me. If it’s all I can afford, I’d take it. If I had all the money, I wouldn’t.

2008 Lagoon 440

If I’m correct Lagoon is now part of the Beneteau Group. Or was always part of it? Not sure, but it is now. Which is clearly visible in the design. I’ve never set foot on a new one of these little things, but I definitely want to now. Like this boat looks awesome! They sure as hell didn’t skimp on the design. It looks really good, modern, and sleek. Like, hello the tiling in the head! You know what also is a huge plus to modern design, the sheer amount of natural light. Look at that port light on the hull! Gorgeous! I love modern designs and this one definitely has that. Let’s take a moment to compare this to the Nautitech and the Dolphin (which is newer). This Lagoon has the most modern design and it’s not newer than the rest. I would totes buy this if I could afford it. So go do it for me reader and tell me what you think!

This isn’t some extensive list or even a list of the best ones. This is just me digging into a few Catamarans for sale based on a list from Sail Magazine. This is a conversation Nick and I are just starting, and will continue to talk about a lot! We are just keeping our options open and trying to learn as much as possible in the meantime. Feel free to comment on brands you like. Please no shitting on catamarans with just a personal opinion, it’s not constructive. Let’s just have fun and talk about sailing!
